Papiano

A free, browser-based online piano for phone touch, MIDI controller, and QWERTY keyboard — real SoundFont sound, chord detection, and live multiplayer rooms. Nothing to install, no plugin, playable in seconds at papiano.app.

What Papiano is

Papiano is an online piano for phone touch, MIDI controller, and QWERTY keyboard. It combines SoundFont instruments, falling-note visuals, chord feedback, multiplayer rooms, a community MIDI feed, and practice and conversion tools in one browser-based music app — not a demo, a full piano engine with sound, visuals, input handling, and a social layer.

One engine design

Solo Piano, Multiplayer, Learn Music Theory, the Piano Visualizer, and Learn Song each run their own tuned copy of the same piano engine design, so every mode feels and sounds consistent. Test Your Pitch, Sheet Player, MIDI Hub, and QWERTY Sheet sit alongside them for ear training, notation, sharing, and converting.

Real input, not a toy

Phone touch, QWERTY keyboard, and Web MIDI controllers are all first-class input methods, tuned for timing and velocity.

Why phone, MIDI, and QWERTY all matter

expand_more

Most piano tools pick one input method and treat the rest as an afterthought — heavy on mobile, limited on desktop, or unusable without a MIDI controller. Papiano is built around all three from the same engine: tap on phone, type on a computer keyboard, or plug in a MIDI controller for velocity-sensitive playing.

Sound and visual direction

expand_more

Papiano uses SoundFont-based instruments rather than a flat synthetic tone, layered with falling notes, chord display, sustain, strings, particles, and glow that scale down automatically on weaker devices. The visuals are built to support playing, not compete with it.

Online features

expand_more

Profiles, chat, friends, requests, blocked users, leaderboard records, and multiplayer rooms share one player identity, so moderation and room safety work consistently across every online feature — see the Community Guidelines for the rules that keep that space usable.

Where the project stands

expand_more

Papiano is an independently built, active project rather than a funded company — see the Team section below. Core piano playback, MIDI, multiplayer, and chat are stable and used daily, while newer modes are still being finished.

Frequently asked

Straight answers to what people ask before trying Papiano.

Is Papiano free to use?

expand_more

Yes. The full piano engine, sound, visuals, chat, and multiplayer rooms are free. Optional pay-as-you-go Credit ($1 = 100 Credits, no subscription) only tops up extras like AI chat and the Piano Visualizer — it does not unlock gameplay features.

Do I need to install anything?

expand_more

No. Papiano runs entirely in the browser at papiano.app. There is nothing to download on phone or desktop.

What devices and inputs does it support?

expand_more

Phone touch, mouse, a computer QWERTY keyboard, and physical MIDI controllers connected through Web MIDI. Landscape orientation shows more keys on phone.

Is my data sold or shared with advertisers?

expand_more

No. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what is collected and which infrastructure processes it.

Team

Papiano is shaped through piano engine work, interface design, online systems, audio tuning, copy review, and release review.

Panpan

Founder and project owner: concept, UI/UX direction, feature decisions, piano review, visual direction, and final release control.

SoundFont sources

FluidR3 GM (Frank Wen, MIT) for most instruments, Atmos Grand (Karoryfer, Versilian, Yingchun Soul, CC0), and Salamander Grand Piano V3 (Alexander Holm, CC BY 3.0) for the Sheet Player — full attribution in the repo's soundfonts manifest.

Sheet music rendering

OpenSheetMusicDisplay (BSD-3-Clause) — renders the Sheet Player's music notation.
