The Home screen cards are easy to mix up by name, so here's exactly what each one is:
/learn: a fixed keyboard for exploring scales and chords, not a song player.Solo Piano and Multiplayer share almost the same top bar: Fullscreen, MIDI, Sustain, SoundFont, Audio, Piano, Visual, Metronome, Tools, and a −/+ Transpose stepper on the far right. Multiplayer adds Rooms and Leave next to Fullscreen. The Piano Visualizer and Learn Song keep MIDI but replace the standalone Sustain button with a Player button (also doubles as Play/Pause); the Visualizer adds a Record button on top of that. Every one of these buttons is broken down in detail in the Solo Piano tab.
Solo Piano, Learn Music Theory, and loading a MIDI/MusicXML file straight into the Piano Visualizer all work as a guest. Everything with a social or persistent-progress angle needs sign-in: Multiplayer, MIDI Hub, transcribing audio/video/links in the Visualizer or Learn Song, Papiano AI, chat and friends, quests and credits, and the leaderboard.
These are unrelated despite the similar name. A MIDI controller is a physical keyboard you plug into your computer — connect it from the MIDI button in Solo Piano, Multiplayer, or the Visualizer. MIDI Hub is a community feed of shared MIDI song files, with no connection to hardware at all — see the Visualizer tab.
Solo Piano, Multiplayer, the Visualizer, and Learn Song all share the same underlying piano engine and the same settings panels (Sound, Visual, Piano, Metronome, Presets) — the Sound and Visuals tabs of this guide apply to all of them. Learn Music Theory (/learn) is a separate, simpler engine built just for scales and chords.
If a device struggles: switch Graphics Quality to Potato first (Tools panel), then lower Particles and glow, then lower Reverb. See the Tips tab for the full checklist.
Almost nothing auto-saves between visits — only the Chord Detector mode and the Auto Velocity toggle remember themselves. Everything else (sound, visuals, keys, metronome) resets to factory defaults on a fresh load unless you press Save My Preset — see the Sound tab for exactly what that covers.
Papiano is always a full 88-key piano, A0 to C8, no matter how the keyboard looks on screen. Visible Keys only changes how much of that range is shown at once — it never removes notes from what you can actually reach.
Open the Piano panel and pick a preset: 34 keys (a compact window good for phones), 56 keys, or the full 88. These numbers count total keys (white + black) in the visible window, not white keys alone.
Below the presets, a −/+ stepper lets you dial in any width from 3 to 52 white keys. Tapping a preset or the stepper doesn't change the keyboard immediately — it stages a pending count, and the counter above updates live. The Apply button's label reflects this: it reads "Apply N Tuts" while a change is pending, and "Tuts Applied" once you've committed it. Nothing on screen actually changes size until you press Apply.
When fewer than 88 keys are visible, drag or swipe left/right anywhere below the keybed to pan across the rest of the range, with momentum and a snap to the nearest white key. There's no separate octave-shift button — panning is how you reach the octaves currently off-screen.
Still inside the Piano panel: Black Key Width (70–130%, default 120%) and Black Key Height (45–75%, default 60%) reshape the black keys independently of the white keys. Piano Visibility (0–100%, default 100%) and Piano Height (0–100%, default 50%) control how much of the keybed shows and how tall it sits on screen.
The +/− control in the top bar shifts every note you play up or down by one semitone per click — 12 clicks moves a full octave. It affects touch, QWERTY, and MIDI input the same way, and there's no built-in limit to how far you can shift.
Tap the on-screen keys with a finger or a mouse click. Multiple fingers can hold different keys down at the same time, so full chords work exactly like they would on a real keyboard, not just single notes.
Sliding a held finger or held mouse button across the keys releases each key the moment you leave it and presses the next one the instant you land on it — useful for fast glissando runs without lifting your hand.
This is the complete map, read straight off the code — every white key and every black key, no gaps. Lower-case letter = press that key alone. UPPER-CASE letter = hold Shift and press that same key. Numbers can't be "capitalized," so their Shift version is written as Shift+N. Middle C is the t key.

The highest notes, C#7 to C8 — above the plain range, which stops at C7 = m. Four use Ctrl, the rest use spare Shift slots:

Why some extreme keys use Shift, not Ctrl. Eleven Ctrl combinations are claimed by the browser itself — Ctrl+W closes the tab, Ctrl+T opens one, and Ctrl+S, P, A, D, F, G, H, J, R open its own dialogs. Those presses never reach the page at all, so the notes behind them were unplayable. They now sit on Shift combinations that are otherwise unused (#, &, ) and the capitals R U A F K X N M), which no browser intercepts. The main 61-key range from C2 to C7 is unchanged.

Shift/Ctrl are read as whatever your keyboard is doing right now, not tied to one note. So the order matters: press the plain notes of a chord first, then hold Shift/Ctrl and press the sharp or extreme-range key last. If you hold Shift or Ctrl down first and then press an unrelated plain key, that key gets read as its own Shift/Ctrl version instead — a different note, or nothing if that key has none. Real hardware (touch, mouse, MIDI) doesn't have this limit; it only applies to typing chords on a computer keyboard.
Press the MIDI button to request access through the browser's Web MIDI API — Papiano then listens to every connected input device. This needs a browser that supports Web MIDI (Chrome or Edge on desktop); Papiano shows a toast if the current browser doesn't support it.
Once MIDI is enabled, plugging in a controller afterward still works without pressing the button again — Papiano reconnects automatically on hot-plug. A real sustain pedal is read as MIDI Control Change 64 and works independently of the on-screen Sustain button.
The Sustain button and the Space bar both toggle sustain on/off — press once to hold it, again to release, rather than needing to be held down. A real MIDI sustain pedal stacks on top of that independently, and the Main Sustain slider in Audio settings controls how long the sound tail actually rings out once sustain is engaged.
Off by default. When off, every touch/mouse/QWERTY press sounds at one fixed strength — a real MIDI controller always sends its own true velocity regardless of this toggle, since it already has real dynamics to send.
Turn it on and Papiano runs a small dynamics engine instead of a flat volume: it builds a phrase arc that rises then settles back over roughly every 16 notes (resetting whenever you pause for about 0.8 seconds, so a new phrase starts fresh), leans brighter in the treble and rounder in the bass, gently ducks the lower notes of a chord under the top note the way a real hand naturally emphasizes melody over harmony, accents bigger melodic leaps a little harder, and tapers fast runs with a crescendo going up and a diminuendo coming down. Every note still lands within a sane, controlled loudness range — it colors the dynamics, it never swings from silent to slamming.
Next to Auto Velocity, a live meter shows the strength of the last note played, whether it came from Auto Velocity, a fixed manual press, or a real MIDI controller — useful for confirming dynamics are actually changing in real time.
Three modes in the Tools panel: Off hides the chord name entirely. Basic reads triads up through 9th chords — enough for most pop/lead-sheet playing. Pro (the default) adds 11ths, 13ths, altered dominants (like 7b9, 7#9, 7#11, or 7alt), bass-note/slash-chord detection, and partial "no-5th" voicings, covering jazz and extended harmony Basic would miss or mislabel.
Whichever mode is on, Papiano shows two readings at once — a primary guess and a secondary alternate — because the exact same notes are sometimes correctly nameable more than one way (a chord and its relative, or a chord vs. its slash-chord reading). That is not a bug when they disagree; trust your ear and the musical context over either label.
The primary and secondary chord readings each get their own color picker in the Tools panel (both blue by default), so you can tell the two apart at a glance instead of reading two overlapping labels in the same color — plus a one-tap Reset Chord Color button to undo any changes.
Concert Grand (the default), Yamaha Grand, Bright Grand, Soft Piano, Rhodes EP, and Harpsichord.

Layer sounds a second instrument alongside the main one — off by default, set to Violin when you enable it. It's a way to thicken the sound, for example strings sitting quietly under a piano.
A dual-handle range slider (1–88, default covering the full range) restricts where the Layer instrument sounds — for example, strings only under the left hand while the main piano still covers every key.
Under Custom SF2, upload your own .sf2 file. Papiano first does a quick, lightweight read of just the file's preset directory, so even a file hundreds of megabytes large lists every instrument preset inside it almost instantly, before any actual audio is touched. Only once you pick a specific preset does it fully decode the real audio samples for that preset — keeping the file's own loop points so sustained notes loop cleanly instead of cutting off, and applying that preset's own volume envelope and tone filter so it sounds the way its creator intended, not just like raw samples. All of this parsing happens entirely in your browser — the file is never uploaded anywhere, so it stays private to your device.
All default to 100% volume and sustain with 0% reverb. Reverb adds room ambience; sustain controls how long notes ring after you let go, independent of the Sustain button/pedal toggle.
Layer Volume defaults to 75%, Layer Reverb to 0%, and Layer Fade controls how long the second instrument's tail rings out on its own timer, adjustable from 0.1 to 10 seconds.
A BPM slider from 20 to 300 (default 120), plus quick −10/−1/+1/+10 buttons for fine adjustment without dragging.
Four options: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 (the default), and 6/8 — this sets how many beats land in each bar and where the accented first beat falls.
Four tick sounds — Click (default), Beep, Wood, and Hi-Hat — each with a louder, accented variant on beat one of every bar, plus visual beat dots alongside the audio.
Save My Preset stores every Sound, Visual, Piano, and Metronome setting to your device. Load My Preset brings them all back; Delete My Preset clears the saved copy. Solo Piano and the Piano Visualizer share the same preset, since they share the same engine.
Resets every setting on the page back to factory values in one tap — instrument choice, all visuals, key count, chord detector, metronome, everything covered in the Sound and Visuals tabs of this guide.
Only two things remember themselves automatically: the Chord Detector mode and the Auto Velocity toggle. Everything else — instrument, key count, every visual slider, metronome settings — resets to factory defaults on a fresh visit unless you've pressed Save My Preset first.
In Solo Piano and Multiplayer, there's no song loaded, so falling notes work in reverse from what the name suggests: the instant you press a key, a small colored bar spawns right at the strike line and grows upward for as long as you hold the note, at a rate tied to the Speed slider. Let go and that bar stops growing and instead floats straight up until it scrolls off the top of the screen and disappears. It's real-time feedback for what you just played, not a pre-scored waterfall — the bar's final height is basically a record of how long you held that note.
In the Piano Visualizer and Learn Song, an actual song is loaded, so the same visual becomes true top-down falling notes on a dedicated layer — bars descend from the top of the stage on the song's own clock and reach the keys at exactly the moment you're meant to play them, the way a standard note-highway works.
Single, Crystal, Outline, Midnight, Gradient, and Rainbow — a purely visual choice, all six respond to every other falling-note setting the same way.
Choose Rectangle or Rounded (the default) for the base shape, and fine-tune how sharp or pill-shaped the corners are with the Roundness slider (0–100%, default 100%).
Note Size ranges 5–20 (default 18), Note Opacity 10–100% (default 100%), and Speed 0–100% (default 75%) — Speed controls how fast bars grow and travel, independent of playback tempo.
Paints the left and right hand ranges in two different colors instead of one, divided at a key you choose with its own slider (1–88, default key 44 — roughly the middle of the keyboard).
A glow flare at the exact point where a falling note meets the keys, with its own Reaction Intensity slider (0–100%, default 100%) — separate from the Strike Line effect below.
The glowing line across the keybed itself, on by default. Its own sliders: Intensity (default 70%), Opacity (default 100%), Saturation (default 100%), Aura Height (default 50%), and Motion Speed (default 50%), plus a dedicated color picker.
Particle "dust" sprays from each key you strike, on by default. A V1/V2 toggle switches whether particles render behind (V1) or in front of (V2) the falling notes.
Count (0–50, default 40%), Size (0–50, default 50%), Opacity (0–100, default 100%), Speed (0–100, default 30%), Turbulence (0–100, default 30%), Fade (0–100, default 40%), and Saturation (0–100, default 100%) — each independent.
Like falling notes, particles can use separate left/right colors, divided at their own configurable split key (default 44).
Off, Note Names, Octave (the default), or Keyboard — Keyboard mode prints the matching QWERTY key on every piano key, the fastest way to learn the mapping without memorizing it.
Off by default. When on, pressed keys glow, with its own Intensity slider (0–100%, default 50%).
Two separate color pickers repaint the keybed itself, independent from every falling-note or particle color.
Upload your own image, choose how it fits the screen — Cover, Contain, or Stretch (default Cover) — and where it sits — Center, Top, or Bottom (default Center).
Opacity (0–100%, default 100%), Dark Overlay for contrast against the keys (0–100%, default 0%), and Blur (0–20px, default 0px).
Off by default. Draws a vertical divider at every C key across the stage, which can help line up falling notes visually, especially at wider Visible Keys settings.
Default is the standard look. Child switches to a bolder neobrutalism style that changes the keys, falling notes, and overall interface at once — a single toggle, not a mix-and-match.
Two tiers: Default (no caps, every effect at full strength) and Potato (heavier effects like particle dust are hidden or capped for weaker devices). This is a manual switch — Papiano doesn't auto-detect your device, so choose Potato yourself if things feel heavy.
A small FPS readout you can toggle on to judge the real effect of Graphics Quality and every visual slider above, instead of guessing.
Multiplayer needs a signed-in profile for every action — creating a room, joining one, and even opening the Players list.
Drops you straight into the first open public room that has space, skipping the room list entirely. If nothing qualifies, Papiano tells you no public rooms are open instead of forcing a wait.
Shows everyone currently connected, sorted online-first; switch the filter to see only your Friends list instead of everyone.
Name your room (up to 32 characters) and pick a capacity from 2 to 6 players (default 6).
Public rooms anyone can join directly. Private rooms need a password you set at creation — the "Code" label shown on a private room in the list just means "password required," there's no separate shareable invite code.
Only 15 rooms can exist across all of Papiano at once. Host Room shows "Rooms Full" and becomes disabled once that cap is hit — you'll need to wait for one to close.
Each account can create a room only once every 30 seconds. You also only ever own one live room at a time — hosting again while you already own one just reopens it instead of creating a second.
Tap the room card and you're in — Papiano waits for your SoundFont to finish loading first, so the room never appears with silent audio.
Tapping a private room's card opens a password prompt instead of joining immediately; entering the wrong password shows an inline error rather than kicking you back to the list.
Everyone plays their own instrument, not one shared piano — you hear every player in real time, each shown in their own color on the falling notes and keys. Sustain pedal state and instrument choice sync separately for each person.
Under the hood, every note you play is sent out in small batches roughly every 18 milliseconds, each tagged with a running sequence number so a delayed or out-of-order packet never overrides a more recent one. Joining a room mid-song never plays you notes from before you connected, and if a note's release signal ever gets lost, Papiano force-releases it after about 10 seconds so nobody's piano gets stuck ringing forever.
Chord detection runs for every player at once, not just you — each player's detected chord is labeled in that same player's own falling-note color above the keys, so you can watch what chord you're playing and what chord someone else in the room is playing at the same moment, told apart purely by color instead of overlapping text.
Tap any player's avatar to see their instrument, country, bio, and vote counts (Like/Dislike), alongside action buttons for friending, blocking, and reporting.
The Player Volume slider and Mute button on a profile are personal — they only change what you hear, not what anyone else in the room hears. Easy to forget it's set if a specific player suddenly sounds too quiet.
All three are available right from a player's profile panel inside a room, so you don't need to leave to manage who you play with.
Only the room's owner can moderate. Remove Player kicks and bans in one action, with an Unban list in the room's chat panel to reverse it later.
Both are room-wide, owner-only actions — they silence that player's messages or instrument for everyone in the room, not just the host, and they're separate from the personal Player Volume control above.
Shows the last 60 messages sent in the room, supports replying to a specific message (with a preview of what you're replying to above the composer), and has a 300-character limit per message with a live counter.
Learn Music Theory (/learn) is a focused, standalone tool built on a fixed 4-octave keyboard — not a song player. It has two tabs, Learn Scale and Learn Chord, and your last settings are remembered the next time you open it.
Pick a root note and a scale type from a searchable list grouped into Major & Minor, Modes (Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Locrian), Pentatonic & Blues, Symmetric (Whole Tone, Chromatic, both Diminished scales), and World & Regional scales (Pelog, Slendro, Chinese Pentatonic, Japanese Hirajoshi, Indian Bhairav, Arabic Hijaz).
Play runs the scale ascending then descending at your chosen tempo (40–180 BPM), with the keys lighting up in sync; Stop cancels it mid-way.
Pick a root and a chord type from Triads, 6ths, 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, and altered dominants — a live chord label (e.g. "Cm7b5/Eb") updates as you change any setting, even before pressing Play.
Reorders the chord's own notes — Root, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd inversion — using only tones that are already part of the chord.
A separate, independent toggle from Inversion — it lets you put any note underneath as the bass, even one that isn't part of the chord at all, producing labels like "C13/D".
Block plays every note of the chord at once; Arpeggio plays them one at a time in sequence. Either way, Play/Stop/Tempo work the same as Learn Scale.
Tab, root, type, inversion, slash state, chord mode, and tempo are all remembered on your device between visits — no sign-in needed for this to work.
Search MIDI Hub (always free), upload a MIDI or MusicXML file directly (always free, most accurate), or upload audio/video or paste a TikTok link to have Papiano transcribe the notes for you (YouTube isn't supported).
MIDI/MusicXML is always free. Transcribing audio, video, or a link costs 20 credits and is capped at a 10-minute clip — a required consent checkbox confirms you have the right to use the content before it starts.
Unlike the Piano Visualizer, Learn Song's Stage waits for you. The song is broken into chord "steps" — notes that land within 30 milliseconds of each other count as one step, so a natural, fast hand movement still registers as simultaneous even if it isn't millisecond-perfect. Each step slides down and freezes right at the strike line until you actually hold down every note of that step together at once; pressing them one at a time and letting go early doesn't count, and only once you're holding the full step does the song let go and slide in the next one.
There's no scoring, no accuracy percentage, and no penalty for extra notes played alongside it. The pace is entirely up to you, so there's no speed slider and the seek bar is disabled — seeking isn't meaningful when the clock only moves at your own pace.
Play/Pause, Restart (resets to the first step), and Change Song (returns to the song picker) — a completion toast confirms when you've finished the whole song.
Turns on automatically when the loaded file already resolves into two or more hand/track layers — a properly hand-split MIDI, or a transcription that came out with separate hands — and stays off for a plain single-track file instead of guessing a split that might be wrong. Right Hand Color and Left Hand Color can each be customized either way. Learn Song also accepts a hardware MIDI controller through its own MIDI button, the same as Solo Piano.
Same options as Learn Song: search MIDI Hub, upload a MIDI/MusicXML file, or import audio/video or a TikTok link for transcription.
No transcription involved — the file's own note data is read directly, so this is both the free option and the most accurate one.
Costs 20 credits and capped at a 10-minute clip. Paste a TikTok video URL — YouTube isn't supported — or upload the audio/video file directly.
Required before importing audio or a link: confirming you have the right to use the content, and that you understand transcription accuracy isn't perfect on a full mix.
Transcription reads a piano part out of a full audio mix, so it can lose accuracy under vocals, drums, or bass. Nothing you upload or link is kept on the server after the transcription finishes.
Shows the song title with Restart, Play, and Pause controls, plus a Change Song button that returns you to the loader without losing your visual settings.
The Visualizer auto-plays on its own clock, so its seek bar can be dragged to scrub anywhere in the song. Learn Song's equivalent bar is disabled, since that mode's pace comes from your own playing instead.
Turns on automatically when the loaded file already resolves into two or more hand/track layers, and stays off for a plain single-track file instead of guessing a split — the Right Hand Color / Left Hand Color pickers work exactly as they do in Learn Song. The Visualizer also accepts a hardware MIDI controller through its own MIDI button, the same as Solo Piano.
On by default — prints the pitch letter name at the bottom of every falling note bar, useful while sight-reading a song you don't know yet.
The Record button (desktop browsers only) captures your screen and the app's audio together using your browser's native screen-share picker, so you choose what to record. Stopping the recording automatically downloads a .webm video file.
The same semitone transpose stepper from Solo Piano is available here too, shifting the loaded song's pitch without changing its speed.
Despite the name, MIDI Hub is a community feed for sharing and discovering MIDI files, not a place to manage MIDI controller connections — plug in your controller from Solo Piano, Multiplayer, or the Visualizer instead. MIDI Hub requires signing in.
Posting needs a MIDI file and a caption. A difficulty tag (Beginner, Medium, or Hard) is required too; a cover image, artist name, and genre are optional extras.
Every post can be liked and commented on (with threaded replies), and carries two shortcuts: Open in Visualizer and Learn Song, which load that MIDI straight into either mode without you needing to download or re-upload anything.
The Piano Visualizer plays a song at you. Learn Song waits for you: the falling notes stop at the strike line and only move on once you actually play the right keys. There is no timing pressure and nothing to fail — you set the pace.
Load a song the same three ways as the Visualizer: upload a .mid/.midi or .musicxml file, search MIDI Hub, or paste a TikTok link for transcription. MIDI and MusicXML are exact note data and always free; a link has to be transcribed first.
Real MIDI files are rarely perfectly simultaneous. A chord recorded by a human is often rolled, with its notes a few dozen milliseconds apart. Played back strictly, that turns one chord into three separate steps and playing them together scores wrong presses.
Hit Tolerance (Player panel, default 150 ms, range 0–400) fixes that. Every step within that span of the current one is playable right now, in any order, with no penalty. Set it to 0 to demand the exact order the file was recorded in.
That band is the Hit Tolerance window drawn as a place on screen, so leniency is something you can see rather than a number you have to imagine. Its height is your tolerance converted to pixels, so it re-sizes itself automatically when you change Falling Speed or Practice Tempo.
Anything inside the band is playable now. At default settings the band is deliberately thin — that is the honest truth about how close those notes really are, not a rendering glitch.
There is deliberately no held/pressed colour during a lesson. A correct hit is the green flash and then nothing, so a key the lesson has finished with goes plain even while your finger is still down.
Blocks are removed per note, not per chord, so playing two notes of a three-note chord clears exactly those two and leaves the third waiting. If you play a note that belongs to a later step, it is credited to that step rather than thrown away.
If a song has a rest, the next key only lights up once its block actually reaches the tolerance band — not the instant the previous chord resolved. Pressing the right note before its turn is neither credited nor counted wrong; the lesson simply waits.
Practice Tempo changes how fast the song would play if you kept up. Falling Speed changes only how far apart the notes look on screen. Slowing the speed spreads a dense passage out so you can read it without changing the music itself.
Every other mode offers it; Learn Song does not. The bright Neobrutalism surface fights against a screen whose entire job is reading note positions against a line. A stored preset that still says Child lands on the default theme here.
An audio-only game: Papiano plays a note or a chord and you name it. No falling notes, no keyboard to read — the point is to connect what you hear to what it is called. Good for five minutes before a practice session.
Renders proper staff notation instead of falling blocks, and moves the cursor along in time with Papiano’s own piano sound. Upload MusicXML to get exactly what the file says; upload a plain MIDI and it is converted to notation first, quantized to a sixteenth-note grid, with hands split by track and pitch.
Because that conversion is an approximation, a MusicXML file will always read more accurately than a converted MIDI.
Where players upload and find MIDI files. Search by title or artist, filter by genre, like and comment, then send a song straight into the Piano Visualizer or Learn Song. Uploading MIDI is always free and needs no transcription.
Each post has a Preview button that plays up to 30 seconds in place. The first tap downloads the piano samples the song actually needs, so it takes a moment on a slow connection; every preview after that starts immediately.
Nothing plays until you tap — the feed never starts audio on its own — and only one post plays at a time.
Converts a .mid file into the keyboard-letter notation piano players share online: [tu] for notes struck together, - for rests. Copy it or download a .txt. Everything runs in your browser — the file is never uploaded.
The chips under the sheet always tell you what was changed: how many notes were simplified away, folded into range, or merged onto one key.
Profile photo, display name (2–24 characters), role, country, and a short bio (up to 160 characters), all editable from the Account tab.
Your Play Time and User ID are shown read-only on your own Account tab. Other players can find you by name or by your public ID (just the number, no # needed) from the Friends search box.
Chat has four views: your recent conversations, your friends list, incoming friend requests, and your blocked list — each with its own unread badge where relevant.
Global Chat, Announcement, and Suggestions & Feedback are open to everyone. A separate VIP-only room is reserved for VIP members.
A direct message can only be opened once two players are friends — you can't message a stranger directly. Blocked users can't message each other either way, regardless of friend status.
Send a request from a player's profile (in a room, or via search); the other player can accept or decline it from their Requests view.
Opened from the AI tab, Papiano AI answers music theory questions, suggests chord progressions, builds practice plans, and explains how Papiano's own features work.
Accepts attached images per message — useful for a screenshot of a setting or a photo of sheet music. Same 1 credit per message as any other Papiano AI message, and replies can be wrong, so verify anything important.
Conversations are saved in a sidebar, so you can keep several separate chats going — for example, one for practice planning and another for theory questions — rather than one throwaway thread.
Credit is a pay-as-you-go balance you spend on extras like Papiano AI chat and the Piano Visualizer — it does not add any gameplay advantage; every player has the same piano and the same features either way. You can also earn Credit for free through daily quests.
$1 = 100 Credits. Pick a quick amount or enter a custom one on the Credit page (hamburger menu), then pay instantly via QRIS, bank transfer, e-wallet, or Alfamart (Indonesia), crypto, or card/PayPal. It's pay-as-you-go, not a subscription, and purchases are non-refundable once credited.
Spending: 1 credit per Papiano AI message, 20 credits to transcribe audio/video/links into a song. Global Chat and MIDI file uploads are always free.
10 minutes played (+10 credits), 30 minutes (+25), 1 hour (+50), and 2 hours (+100), resetting every day at local midnight.
Time toward these quests comes from playing anywhere in Papiano — Solo Piano, Multiplayer, or just having the app open and active — not only while the Quest page happens to be on screen.
A one-time +100 credits each for following Papiano on X (Twitter), TikTok, Discord, and Telegram — claim them once from the Quest page.
Ranks players purely by total play time, not skill — with Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Total boards showing the top 10 for each. The boards themselves refresh from the server every 30 seconds, but your own row ticks upward every single second while you're actively playing, so you can watch your position move in real time instead of waiting for the next refresh.
Every mode has to finish streaming its SoundFont before it can make sound — wait for loading to complete before pressing keys. If the page has been open silently for a while, browsers sometimes block audio until you interact with the page once; a single tap or click anywhere unlocks it.
Web MIDI (the browser API Papiano uses) is a desktop-browser feature — use Chrome or Edge. If your controller still isn't picked up, make sure it's connected before or after pressing the MIDI button; either order works, since Papiano watches for hot-plugged devices.
Check that you haven't muted them from their profile panel — Player Volume/Mute there is personal and only affects your own playback, so it's easy to forget it's set.
Only Chord Detector mode and Auto Velocity remember themselves automatically. Press Save My Preset before making big changes to sound or visuals, so you can always get back to where you started with Load My Preset.
Visible Keys resets to the full 88 on every fresh load unless it was part of a saved preset — save one after dialing in a custom count you want to keep.

The Chord Detector is feedback, not a judge — the exact same notes can sometimes be named more than one correct way (for example a chord vs. its relative or a slash-chord reading). Trust your ear and musical context over the label when they disagree.
You just can't spend on paid actions (AI chat, Global Chat, transcription) until you earn more — nothing about the free piano itself is ever gated behind credits. Play daily quests or claim the one-time social quests to top up.
